WHY DOES MY GEN. LIGHT STAY ON & MY MOTOR ONLY RUN FOR 10 SEC. AFTER I START IT?

GET LIGHT COMES ON WHEN I START ENGIN.
THE ENGIN RUNS FOR 10 SEC. THEN SHUTS OFF
WHEN I TURN THE IGNITION TO ON THE GEN. LIGHT DOES NOT COME ON BUT ONLY WHEN I START THE ENGIN DOES IT COME ON.
COULD IT BE THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR ON THE INSIDE FINDER OR THE GENERATOR GONE BAD?
PLEASE ADVISE ME .........................

  this sounds more like a fuel or spark problem than a generator problem. If the alternator was bad eventually you would drain the battery and then not be able to restart because no battery power to turn the starter. i would check fuel pressure and carbuerator, then check spark. does it allways start right back up after stalling out?
