Extremely low idle in my Camry
The idle speed on my vehicle is so low that when sitting still, the car almost shuts off. Sitting still with the air on is even worse. Is there a way to adjust the idle on this car? What else could be the issue if the idle cannot be adjusted? The spark plugs are new.

The vehicle stalls at idle. If the throttle is held open slightly it will run fine.
Tests/Procedures: 1. Clean the throttle body and then do the idle relearn procedure on the vehicle.
2. Unhook the battery cables and touch them together for 5-10 min. Then connect the battery cables and push the throttle plates closed completely. While holding the throttle plates closed, have a helper turn the ignition switch to the on position. Allow the throttle plates to move when the key is turned on. Reinstall the intake air boot to the throttle body and then start the vehicle. Allow the vehicle to idle for a few minutes and then test drive the vehicle to check for correct idle speed.

HouseCallAuto 4/20/2010The throttle plate is the metal plate inside the throttle body that moves from fully closed to fully open when the gas pedal is pushed. You can see it when the air inlet hose is disconnected from the throttle body.

southerngq 5/17/2010I just completed the procedure to reset the idle in my vehicle as listed above in the last reponse. However, now the check engine light is on. What could be causing this? Why could we have done during the procedure to cause an engine fault?
