Engine lights on and when in drive the car shakes except when in neutral?? Also check coolint is on check it good

The guy I bought it from told me it needs spark plugs that's why it pulls and shakes but it could be more.

  First thing is to have the check engine light scanned . Could be many things . Get the codes and let us know what they are .
