1997 Chevrolet Blazer LS 6Cyl4.3L - Engine
engine knocking - tighten lifters?? or something else ??
hi i just noticed it this morning - im getting a slight knock from the engine - and its not overbearingly loud - it does get louder with revving of the engine - but comparable with the engine - not louder than - listening under the hood i sounds like its coming from the vicinity of the injector under the plastic injector cover its definitely coming from the top in the rear of the engine - i was told that it might be my 'tap-its' - that it might be as simple as taking the valve cover off and tightening the lifters/rods under the valve cover - im not sure tho - i dont have alot of $$ and there are other problems with this car - so im not sure if its something that i should fix or not - i need some advise and help

Well the knocking can be annoying, check the oil first make sure it is full, a tic or knock can be created by low engine oil at times. It does sound like a lifter knock, which can sometimes be fixed by taking off th calve covers and adjusting the valves I would start there and see if that fixes the problem, taking off the valve covers and checking the valve adjustment is pretty straight forward and shouldn't cost to much.

well..... the auto parts store tole me i could get lucas oil stabilizer or prolong ....and that would shut it up for now - but thats temporary - i had a few mechanics look at it - one with a stethoscope on the engine top and then under the car - he looked first - and he told me that i have 'valve chatter' and its either the main bearings or rod bearings in cylinders 1 or 2 - the other places i took it to they didnt even do that - but told me the same thing without any leading questions from me - the first guy said thats an entire weekend job - if you know what youre doing - and i kinda dont - not with things like that - or 1800 to 2500+ for someone to fix it (1800 to drop a motor - 2500+ to rebuild) - he told me that i could drain the oil and then take off the oil pan and inspect the bearings....but what am i looking for exactly ?? he said that if its a rod bearing - that requires disassembly of eveything around the valve covers - and then they have to come off - and the rod needs to be taken completely out in order to get to all of the bearings- im now wondering if its worth it for me to fix this car - or has it had it ? - most of the buy here- pay here places dont want it to trade - so i might be stuck with it even after i get another vehicle - should i try to fix it ??

Depending on the condition of the vehicle, but it does sound like the mechanics are being straight forward with you. The engine will eventually need to be replaced/ overhauled. How is the vehicle running now? Besides the knock is it idleing normally? Or is it running really rough?

The truck is getting old how many miles does it have? It would be expensive to put an engine in so the value may not be there and it may be worth donating or sending to a salvage yard, salvage yards typically pay something for the vehicle. If you try the lucas treatment it will be temporary but it may be worth driving it as is until it is completely had it. The only issue with that is there is the possiblity it might break down someday on you, or there is the possibility it will ru with the knock for another 100,00 miles...

You have options the issue with an older vehicle is the value of putting 1800-2500 into it even if you do that the vehicle probably won't evven be worth the amount you just spent to repair it.

...right and thats what i figured with this too - i got it from a buy here place and overpaid for it - but i did pay it off and im not looking forward to taking on a payment again - i have help now- but i dont make as much as i used to - i wont start having work until well into the summer - the car is running rough now - it has been for a while - code reader a while back said that both the O2's needed to be replaced - the MAF is being screwy .......on to part 2....

.......right..... and thats what i figured with this car too - i was told the same about the knock - some told me i had about a week or so from the day i had it looked at - or - it might last a while like you said - especially if i get the 'liquid mechanic' crap and feed the car every now and then - but im on borrowed time and it will get worse the longer i drive it from this point forward - liquid mechanic or not - and that the car is now at a status where i cant trust it - that it WILL fail eventually and strand me somewhere - cant say when - if thats tomorrow or a year from now - only that it will happen - with my luck it would be in BFE somewhere 100 miles from civilization - but its got 89,00+ right now....... bought it with 69,000 or so 2 years ago for 5 G's - i got screwed ....old news ....... i got it from a buy here place and overpaid for it - but i did pay it off and im not looking forward to taking on a payment again - its my biggest worry - and cant be brow-beat for it - i have help now - but i dont make as much as I used to - i wont start having work until well into the summer ....... the car IS running rough now - it has been for a while - code reader a while back said that both the O2's needed to be replaced - the MAF is being screwy .......so it has been stalling out at lights - and wants to 'lurch' forward when holding the brake and its in drive.......i dont really have any braking power right now - i have to about stand on it with both feet to get the car to stop - was told the booster and the cylinder needs replacement - and thats just the bigger problems - so there is way more wrong with it on top of my current situation ..........and i agree that putting four figures into it is not wise - better to take my chances with that kind of money on another car and try to get a similar car with not as many problems .......eh story of my life .....eYikes.....
