when coming to a stop after pressing the brake pedal i keep hearing a knock. what could this be?

  Check the front end for the knock, could be a tie rod, ball joint, axle, control arm. Needless to say you'll just have to check the front end. As for the humming and excessive fuel, has the car be tuned up, new spark plugs wires, etc? A hum is usually an electronic component try and isolate the noise if it is happening at idle open the hood and listen for it.
