Will changing the transmission fluid actually hurt the transmission? I have heard it will if it has high mileage.

  It all depends, if you have never changed your trans fluid it can possible be bad. How many miles do you have? Smell the fluid, see if it smells burnt. Usually change trans fluid every 60000 miles. 4 speed auto takes s-matic usually 4 qts and 5 speed auto takes k-matic.

  Consider this; not changing the fluid will definitely ruin the transmission - given enough time. So your choice is pretty limited - unless you want to go ahead and replace or rebuild the existing transmission.
  You should go ahead and change the fluid and filter - regardless of the mileage, there is always the possibility the transmission will function just fine afterwards. A proper fluid and filter change will only help to extend the life of the transmission.
