2003 Volkswagen EuroVan GLS 6Cyl2.8L - Preventive Maintenance
what caused hole in radiator
Hello. We hired a van which broke down after 40 miles. Overheated - absolutely no water in the engine but big hole in radiator. Am I thinking right that owner forgot to fill the water/coolant before we set off or is it likely that the hole in the radiator got created whilst driving for 40 miles with sufficient water/coolant? Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Thank you

"We hired a van" - I doubt it.

"Am I thinking right that owner forgot to fill the water/coolant before we set off" - Even he filled it to the brim, there was HOLE so it doesnt matter, the problem is the hole.

It can be that the hole happened during your trip. Does the radiator look like its been through hell and back? Where is the hole at? what area? That can tell a lot on what has happened or how it happened.

Sorry but im online, things are a lot easier seein it in person.

Hi Spoon Sports. Thanks for your lines. "Does the radiator look like its been through hell and back? Where is the hole at? what area?" It actually was a rental van (van returned now) and me not knowing very much about engines, can't really answer your questions. The whole engine though (superfically) looked as if it had seen better times. When we poured water into the water container it gushed straight out by the radiator. Like a waterfall, not a drizzle. So I GUESS the hole was at the bottom.

The Road Rescue Man "diagnosed" the big hole in the radiator.
The rental company claims that this "mechanical issue was unforeseeable" where as I believe that they just didn't check the water before renting out the van, and it broke down due to their neglect. (If it was their fault they would have to pay us some money back)
Maybe with your help I understand a bit better how a big hole gets into a radiator and whether it was predictable or not. (As said we only drove for 40 miles)
