When you went through these big puddles, did the vehicle stall immediately after hitting the water at speed or are you saying that you were able to get where you were going and the vehicle would not start after you turned off the engine? If the vehicle stalled after hitting the (deeper than you thought) water very hard, there is a very high probability that the engine ingested water, and the result would be referred to as hydrostatic lock. You cannot compress a liquid. Usually the engine is destroyed. I hope that is not what happened Jorge.
