  My number 1 suspicion would be a bad mass air flow sensor.

  And can you answer this - How can you tell if it is a bad mass air flow sensor??? Is there a way you can tell if it is good or bad????

  You have to read fault codes no matter what. Plug in a code reader and see what codes are stored if any. But, Volkswagens are well known for bad mass air flow sensors, very common. That does not guarantee that this is your cause.
