  Check the on-line reviews; www.edmunds.com, www.kbb.com, www.consumerreports.com. Engine sludge / sludge build-up seems to be a common problem - even with vehicles maintained at the dealerships.

  Sludge build up is not common on 6 cylinder engines.Check for broken cv boots and worn steering and suspension parts.
